X-post pooping outside the box

I am at my wits end! I have 3 neutered male cats ranging in age from 9 to 11 years old. In the last year SOMEBODY has started pooping on the floor. He does it right outside the boxes, on the carpet in the next room, and on the rugs on both stairway landings - it's almost daily now. They've gotten clean bills of health from the vet, I've added a cat box (we now have 3), and I've tried changing litter. I scoop at least once a day, too. I have had all 3 cats since they were kittens and never have had any trouble until recently. Does anyone have a solution? I'm about to make all of them go live outside!! (Not really).

OK, I'm sure you already thought of these possibilities.....but just in case:

    1. Have you changed litter brand?

    2. Have you tried changing the location of the box or boxes (especially if he has a "favorite" box that he preferred to use)? Maybe something traumatic (in feline terms) occurred to him in that location and he is afraid to use the box there now?

    3. Do any of the other boys bother him when he is IN the box? (My one female had a bad habit of sitting on top of the box while her adopted brother was inside doing his business. She would bomp him on the head if his head stuck out of the box at all)

Are you sure it's just one? Not all three?

I have a similar problem with my queen bee diva cat who pees on the couch to express her displeasure with.....well, with anything. We're still battling. Until I get it solved, I keep the couch (a futon) covered in plastic. Maybe you could put plastic down on the areas where he goes? Or, and I hate to recommend this, get that repellent spray to discourage him from going there (although, depending on what the problem is, that might just make him find a new and hidden location to do his business).

What are you using to clean the areas? Does it remove all trace? If they smell what someone else did, it will encourage them ALL to do the same thing in the same places. That could be part of the problem.

If none of this was helpful, I'm sure someone on this group will have better suggestions. This is a great place to find answers, advice and and just plain ole support.
